Terms of Peace

As we continue through this month, we are focusing on the cross and the resurrection… the very foundation of our faith. And in this message, we are brought to consider something that has always been true… the pursuit of peace.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people cried out, “peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” But Jesus responded not with celebration… but with tears, saying, “if you had known the things which make for peace… but now they have been hidden from your eyes.”

And that has always been the problem. People pursue peace… but they never attain it. We cry out for peace, but we can never quite grasp it.

And it is no different in our world today. Peace has become a fixation… peace of mind, freedom from anxiety… and yet the more people seek it, the more anxious they become, the more fearful, the more divided.

We are running after peace… but it is always out of reach.

And that is because we do not understand the terms of peace… or the cost of peace.

Because while the world offers one kind of peace… Jesus offers another. He says, “peace I leave with you… not as the world gives do I give to you.”

So the question becomes… what is this peace? How can it be known? And how can it truly be possessed?

And in John chapter 20, we see that this peace is found in the risen Christ… a peace that the world cannot give and cannot take away.
